about the programme

LAS exists to help Gaelic artists to move forward with a new theatre project. With support from the Theatre Gu Leòr team and a budget for costs, artists will have the opportunity to spend time developing an idea for a new piece of theatre. This could be in any form and on any subject, from a new children’s theatre piece staged in a forest to a physical theatre performance based on a story from history - or something completely different. Tell us about the idea you’re ready to take to the next level!

What will LAS artists receive?

Three successful projects will receive:

  • A budget of up to £5,000 to pay themselves and collaborators, and to cover other project costs;

  • Three guidance sessions with an appropriate creative mentor (e.g. a dramaturg, producer or director);

  • A separate budget of £200 to go and see theatre that expands the artist’s knowledge and practice;

  • Practical support from the Theatre Gu Leòr team to manage the project and consider the next steps;

  • Separate access costs, including childcare costs, should they be required;

  • In order not to disadvantage artists based in the Highlands and Islands, any additional travel costs for these artists will be covered without impacting the project budget.

Different ideas need different types of development and the Theatre Gu Leòr team will work with the successful applicants to plan what would be most useful. With the time and money offered, artists might:

  • Spend time writing, editing and getting feedback on a script;

  • Bring a group of artists and/or actors together for a week to get an idea on its feet;

  • Organise workshops with participants, with a view to co-creating new work with them;

  • A mixture of these things or something completely different!

How will applications be assessed?

We welcome applications from a range of projects, in different forms and influenced by other art forms such as music or dance. The key eligibility criteria are that it is a theatre project, that the main artist is a Gaelic speaker and that Gaelic is the primary language of the final intended output.

Additionally, projects will be assessed on the following:

  • How original and strong the idea is;

  • How appealing the idea might be to audiences in the future;

  • The impact that support from LAS will make on the project and the artist;

  • Whether the aims of the project are appropriate for the artist’s level of experience and the parameters of this opportunity.
