Are you interested in Gaelic theatre? Would you like to support a professional company working all over Scotland?

Theatre Gu Leòr is seeking three new people to join our board and we are keen to hear from people who would like to join our team.

As well as official board members, we are also looking to appoint board observers. If you are interested in being on the board, but are not quite ready to become an official member, board observers will receive mentoring in board skills and legal responsibilities over the course of a year, with the opportunity then to apply for official board membership if they wish.

We are open to applications from anyone with a strong interest in the company, but we’re particularly keen to heard from:

–       artists with links to or interest in Gaelic (not necessarily theatre artists)

–       People based in the Islands

–       People aged 16* to 30

–       People with skills in finance, fundraising, HR or law

The board meets four times per year, usually online. You can read more about our current board members here.

An induction pack will be given to new members, and they will be offered a training course in board skills also. Board observers will also receive specific mentoring and support, in addition to this.

*People aged 16/17 are welcome to join the board, though they will not bear all the same responsibilities as members aged 18+. This can be discussed during the recruitment process.

We offer 1:1 advice sessions to artists and theatre professionals, both new and established. We can discuss employment opportunities, mentoring, professional development, script development, or whatever is most useful for you.

Sessions can take place online, in Glasgow, or at one of our in person Open Door sessions around the country. Keep an eye on our website and social media for news of Open Door sessions near you.

We’re always keen to hear from writers who have partial or full drafts of scripts that they’d like to share with us.

Scripts will be reviewed by our Creative Director, who will complete a Script Review Form considering the following:

• General overview of the script
• Constructive critical feedback
• Suitability for Theatre Gu Leòr
• Suggestions for next steps

This will be shared with the writer within 8 weeks of the script being submitted. Either party can then request a follow up meeting to discuss the script further.

Theatre Gu Leòr is a small company with a limited budget, so while we are always happy to review scripts, we are limited as to what work we can take forward to development or production stage.

About the program

Experiencing different types of theatre is one of the most useful ways for artists to develop their craft and enrich their creativity. We now offer a fund for Gaelic-speaking theatre-professionals to attend productions and events that will support their development.

What support is available?

We can pay for the following costs:

• Tickets
• Travel (over £5.00)*, including additional travel or accommodation costs required for Highlands and Islands based artists
• Access costs, including for those with caring responsibilities

You can request support for performances or events related to theatre, that take place in Scotland, and for up to three events in one application.

*As outlined in our Sustainable Travel Policy, we prioritise public transport, and we won’t pay mileage for car use except when there is no option to take public transport. We do not cover air travel in any case.

Funding will be offered at the discretion of Theatre Gu Leòr. There is a finite budget for this each year and we may not be able to support all applications.

Who is eligible?

Applicants must be artists who:

• Are based in Scotland
• Use Gaelic as part of their work
• Work in the theatre sector, or are aiming to do so.

How do I apply?

Our remaining deadlines for 2025/26 are 15th December 2025 and 16th March 2026.

About the programme

We offer support to theatre professionals, who have an interest in working in Gaelic, to develop their language skills. This is particularly aimed at those who have learned some Gaelic and are looking for the next step towards confidence using and working in the language.

What support is available?

We can pay costs related to improving your Gaelic language skills, for example, a short course, 1:1 tutoring, a series of lessons, and travel and accommodation related to these learning opportunities.

You should work out what mode of learning works best for you, and what the related costs would be.

We can pay up to a maximum of £750, but requests for this amount will need to demonstrate that this will make a substantial difference to the applicant’s level of Gaelic.

Funding will be offered at the discretion of Theatre Gu Leòr. There is a finite budget for this each year and we may not be able to support all applications.

You can include access costs relating to the learning opportunity in your application, including for childcare, and these will not contribute to the limit outlined above, but allocated from a separate budget.

Who is eligible?

Applications must come from artists or theatre professionals that are:

• Based in Scotland
• Working in the theatre sector
• Already working through the medium of Gaelic or aiming to do so in the future.

Although we welcome applications from new learners, priority will be given to applications from those who have undertaken some learning already and who want to make further progress.
