    AIMS OF THEATRE GU LEÒR

    1. The advancement of the arts, through creating and enabling unforgettable theatrical experiences, and building a strong and ambitious Gaelic theatre sector;
    2. The advancement of education, through informal learning and development opportunities for theatre makers, youth theatre  members and audiences;
    3. The advancement of Gaelic, promoting linguistic inclusion and diversity in Scotland.

These are taken from our Articles of Association, our official foundation document. You can read the full document here.

Please also read about our five work streams and our organisational values by clicking here.

    ABOUT THE ORGANISATION

Theatre Gu Leòr is Scotland’s leading Gaelic theatre company. We support, develop and create new, contemporary theatre in Gaelic, working with artists and communities throughout Scotland.

Since its establishment by Muireann Kelly in 2014, the company has brought numerous productions to audiences across Scotland and beyond, including radio drama series, children’s theatre projects, and large-scale plays on some of the most esteemed stages in the country. Our work is ambitious and imaginative, and driven by stories as diverse as the Gaelic community.

You can read about our productions here.

    ABOUT THE BOARD & STAFF

Theatre Gu Leòr is run by our voluntary board and small staff team.

Full-time Creative Director Seona McClintock leads on the artistic programme, while part-time General Manager Rhona Dougall oversees the day-to-day running of the company. Our part-time Strabang! director is Tanya MacDonald, based in Portree, Skye, and Claire Frances MacNeil is our part-time Production and Admin Assistant and supports the core team.

You can read about our board members and staff team here.

    MINUTES OF BOARD MEETINGS

Minutes from our board meetings are kept here, so you can refer back to them at any time.

The minutes of the previous meeting are approved at the next meeting, and any matters arising are dealt with then.

    FINANCES & FUNDERS

Theatre Gu Leòr currently receives regular funding from both Creative Scotland (2025/26 – 2027/28) and from Bòrd na Gàidhlig (2024/25 – 2028/29).

Creative Scotland supports the artistic output of the company, while Bòrd na Gàidhlig supports the aims relating to Gaelic usage and development, particularly Strabang.

The General Manager manages the company’s finances on a day-to-day basis, with support once a month from a bookkeeper. At the end of the financial year, the accounts are passed to an accountant who produces a Trustees Report and Financial Statement, which is then submitted to OSCR and Companies House.

You can read our annual accounts here.

The financial documents don’t always make a lot of sense on their own, so additional detail and explanation is provided at board meetings by the Company Co-ordinator.

    BOARD MEMBER RESPONSIBILITIES

Becoming a board member is a serious undertaking but it should also (hopefully!) be enjoyable.

We’ve put together a short document outlining the main responsibilities of board members and things to be aware of. Please read this thoroughly. The Company Co-ordinator will be happy to expand on any of these points or answer any questions you might have.

To access the document, please click here.

    FURTHER TRAINING

As well as the information above, Theatre Gu Leòr offers training to all new board members, comprising a one-to-one session with our General Manager, Rhona, who has training in this area, and, if required, a day’s training on the Arts & Business Scotland course, Introduction to Being a Board Member. Please contact rhona@theatreguleor.com if you have any question or to arrange further training.

    Many thanks!

  • Send Us A Script

    Send Us A Script

We’re always keen to hear from writers who have partial or full drafts of scripts that they’d like to share with us.

Scripts will be reviewed by our Creative Director, who will complete a Script Review Form considering the following:

    • General overview of the script
    • Constructive critical feedback
    • Suitability for Theatre Gu Leòr
    • Suggestions for next steps

This will be shared with the writer within 8 weeks of the script being submitted. Either party can then request a follow up meeting to discuss the script further.

Theatre Gu Leòr is a small company with a limited budget, so while we are always happy to review scripts, we are limited as to what work we can take forward to development or production stage.

To submit your script, please complete the form below and upload it as a Word document when prompted.

    About the program

Experiencing different types of theatre is one of the most useful ways for artists to develop their craft and enrich their creativity. We now offer a fund for Gaelic-speaking theatre-professionals to attend productions and events that will support their development.

    What support is available?

We can pay for the following costs:

    • Tickets
    • Travel (over £5.00)*, including additional travel or accommodation costs required for Highlands and Islands based artists
    • Access costs, including for those with caring responsibilities

You can request support for performances or events related to theatre, that take place in Scotland, and for up to three events in one application.

*As outlined in our Sustainable Travel Policy, we prioritise public transport, and we won’t pay mileage for car use except when there is no option to take public transport. We do not cover air travel in any case.

Funding will be offered at the discretion of Theatre Gu Leòr. There is a finite budget for this each year and we may not be able to support all applications.

    Who is eligible?

    • Are based in Scotland
    • Use Gaelic as part of their work
    • Work in the theatre sector, or are aiming to do so.

  • Gaelic Support

    Gaelic Support

    About the programme

We offer support to theatre professionals, who have an interest in working in Gaelic, to develop their language skills. This is particularly aimed at those who have learned some Gaelic and are looking for the next step towards confidence using and working in the language.

    What support is available?

We can pay costs related to improving your Gaelic language skills, for example, a short course, 1:1 tutoring, a series of lessons, and travel and accommodation related to these learning opportunities.

You should work out what mode of learning works best for you, and what the related costs would be.

We can pay up to a maximum of £750, but requests for this amount will need to demonstrate that this will make a substantial difference to the applicant’s level of Gaelic.

Funding will be offered at the discretion of Theatre Gu Leòr. There is a finite budget for this each year and we may not be able to support all applications.

You can include access costs relating to the learning opportunity in your application, including for childcare, and these will not contribute to the limit outlined above, but allocated from a separate budget.

    Who is eligible?

Applications must come from artists or theatre professionals that are:

    • Based in Scotland
    • Working in the theatre sector
    • Already working through the medium of Gaelic or aiming to do so in the future.

Although we welcome applications from new learners, priority will be given to applications from those who have undertaken some learning already and who want to make further progress.

    How do I apply?

Our remaining deadlines for 2025/26 are 15th of December 2025 and 16th of March 2026.
